The beginnings of silk point lace or “oya” as it is known in Turkey, date back half a millenium before Christ where evidence of it is found in Egyptian art and early Christian documents. Some say the particular knotting used to fashion these lace ornaments originated with the knotting technique used for fishermen’s nets. The final result is extremely robust and almost impossible to undo. Originally this method was used to make lace trimming but with time was used to create three dimensional objects.

Traditionally, each piece would be designed in such a way as to convey a certain meaning, be it to the spouse or another member of the family.
